Powerlifting Advice and Lessons for First Time Competitors

4000:1, that’s the ratio comparing the amount of time and devotion that goes into training for a powerlifting meet when compared to the actual time spent performing. In a powerlifting meet you have three attempts at the squat, bench press, and deadlift. If a lifter trains for ten hours a week for five months that would total to around seven hundred and twenty thousand seconds of training. Compare that to the approximate twenty seconds a competitor gets on each lift which equates to one hundred and eighty seconds per competition and you come to the 4000:1 ratio. To put that into better perspective, that’s around sixty seven minutes of training put in to each second of competition.

Powerlifting is an investment, so if you’re going to put the time in I believe you’re going to want to make a smart investment which goes even beyond training. As of October 19th I have competed in two powerlifting meets and while there is no shot of hearing my name in the inner circles of the powerlifting elite I believe I can give some insight to people who are interested in competing for the first time.
